META Project

META Project has been created to contribute for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive from European Union and for the 14 Goal “life under water” from United Nations. This project had the support from Portuguese Republic through Fundo Azul, and was coordinated by Museu da Baleia da Madeira. As partners had Instituto do Mar dos Açores, Instituto Gulbenkian in Lisbon, and Mar Ilimitado in Sagres.

The aim of the project was understanding the consequences of the anthropogenic impacts in the residents’ cetacean populations in Portugal, to implement mitigation and effective management measures.

Mar Ilimitado had a crucial roll by collecting opportunist data and understanding the carrying capacity in Portugal mainland, that were two of the questions that the project aimed to answer. Soon will be available a report with the results obtained in the project.
